ABOUT
I'm glad you're here! If you're reading this, you probably clicked the "ABOUT" button. My name is Tobias Jansson, and I live in a small town in Sweden. One of my biggest passions is computer graphics, particularly 3D graphics. I began my journey with graphics on my SVI728 MSX computer in the mid-80s. I got a mouse and a pretty good paint program called Neos-Cheese, which provided lots of fun for my friends and me. As the 8-bit era concluded, my friends and I upgraded to Atari STs. This led me to discover graphic programs like NEOchrome, Degas, Cyberpaint and ray tracing software like GFA Raytrace and Pearl, which, despite taking a whole day to render simple spheres, were quite impressive. Later, I got a copy of POV-Ray (Persistence of Vision Raytracer), a script-based ray tracer that allowed scene crafting in a unique script language. Though powerful, it was challenging to use. It was around that time, I saw 3D Studio for the first time on my friend's PC-386 and was amazed by its power and speed. I couldn't return to GFA-Raytrace or POV-Ray So, I used my savings to buy the Atari Falcon 030 from Atari-Specialisten in Stockholm. It featured a 16MHz MC68030, 16MHz FPU, 32MHz DSP, 4MB RAM, and a 200MB hard drive—a machine of pure power. I bought a 3D render software from Germany called NeoN Grafix, which was very powerful and offered many advanced features. Even though the Falcon was fast, it was still too slow for my 3D graphic needs, so after a while I purchased a PC-486 DX2 and immediately installed 3D Studio for DOS. I kept using my Falcon but in the following years Atari slowly declined, and with it, much of my enthusiasm for computers. I seem to have strayed from the path… This was supposed to be about me, not vintage computers.
Music:
I've always had a passion for electronic music. The first album I ever listened to was Jean-Michel Jarre's "Concerts in China," which I borrowed from my older sister. I was immediately captivated, and Jean Michel Jarre's work has remained a constant in my life ever since. However, my genuine interest in music didn't emerge until I was about 18 years old. I discovered amazing bands like Front 242, And One, Nitzer Ebb, and Covenant, and began exploring all the different Ambient, Trance and Techno genres. After transitioning to using PCs, I found myself missing the chip music from my Atari ST. This led me to start remixing classic chip tunes, aiming to infuse them with a modern twist while honoring their original essence. I've released a couple of remix CDs, available for download in the download section of this website. Listening to chip music remains a great pleasure for me. More recently, I've been creating my own "music," sometimes influenced by the chip music from the C64 and Atari ST. I mix that with my love for hard electronic beats and squeaky acid sounds. I use FL Studio for music production and often create accompanying music videos using tools like 3ds Max and Vegas.
Retro Games:
I have a passion for old-school games, particularly shoot 'em ups. The Gradius (known as Nemesis on MSX) and R-Type series are favorites of mine. Growing up, arcades were rare in my area, so discovering an arcade game in a store or public space was a special occasion. I fondly remember biking with my friend to town to spend our coins on a Gemini Wings arcade machine. Nowadays, I enjoy building and restoring vintage arcade cabinets. Below is a video I made of one of my restorations, or in this case, more of a conversion. A Joker Poker converted into a Pac Man-like arcade machine.
Tinkering:
For as long as I can remember, I’ve been deeply involved in a variety of projects. Whether it’s electronics, vintage computers, film, music, 3D printing, or household repairs, I’m always working on something.
